Alaska 2026 Ferrari Family Trip

One Girdwood base camp, one family convoy, glaciers, salmon rivers, bear country, Denali, and an unrealistic number of snacks, because morale is measured in granola bars.

The plan at a glance

Base camp, big scenery, flexible days, and only mild logistical overconfidence.

We use Girdwood as home base for the first week: mountains outside, shared dinners inside, and day trips in several different directions. Then we drive north for two nights near Denali for interior Alaska, tundra, and the main land-wildlife day.

🏔️

GirdwoodBase camp: mountains, hikes, shared dinners.

🐋

Kenai FjordsBoat day: glaciers, wildlife if we are lucky, cold wind almost certainly filing a formal appearance.

🐻

Skilak / Russian River + DenaliSalmon country, bear awareness, interior wildlife.

Day-by-day itinerary

Tap any day to expand it. On laptop, use the left rail; on phone, use the bottom menu.

Program

  • Most arrivals in Anchorage in the evening.
  • Pick up rental vehicles and load bags.
  • Drive to the Girdwood Airbnb, find bedrooms, and keep the evening simple.

Logistics

  • Drive: Anchorage airport → Girdwood: about 45–50 min.
  • Food: keep dinner/snacks simple; the main grocery run is tomorrow.
  • Reservation: Spacious Girdwood Retreat, 151 Mt Hood Dr, Girdwood. Check-in after 3:00 PM. Confirmation codes omitted.
  • Capacity check: group becomes 13 once Caterina arrives; host approval should be explicit because the listing appears to cap guests at 12.

Program

  • Slow morning in Girdwood.
  • Do the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center as the main structured attraction.
  • Add Portage Lake and, if timing/weather are good, the short Byron Glacier Trail.
  • Return to Girdwood for dinner; most of the group should not spend the evening waiting at the airport.
  • One car goes to Anchorage in the evening for Alberto’s late arrival.

Logistics

  • Drive: Girdwood → Wildlife Center: about 15–20 min; Portage is just beyond that.
  • Lunch: grab something before leaving Girdwood, or keep it simple with a picnic/snacks.
  • Dinner: simple Airbnb meal or local Girdwood pub. Call ahead if trying to seat a large group.
  • Alberto: arrives Anchorage at 9:25 PM. Pickup car leaves Girdwood around 7:30–7:45 PM if doing groceries first, or around 8:15 PM if going airport-only.
  • Grocery run: the Alberto car can pick up the big supply run before the airport; otherwise do a small emergency shop and finish on 8/10.

Program

  • Late morning drive from Girdwood to Anchorage.
  • Finish groceries/gear if the Alberto pickup car did not complete the run on 8/9.
  • Walk a manageable section of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.
  • Lunch in Anchorage.
  • Pick up Caterina at Anchorage airport; her Condor flight arrives at 3:05 PM.
  • Return to Girdwood late afternoon for a normal dinner.

Logistics

  • Drive: Girdwood ↔ Anchorage: about 45–60 min each way.
  • Keep this day light: tomorrow is the long Seward / Kenai Fjords cruise day.
  • Airport split: if the group is still doing Anchorage activities, pickup is easy; otherwise one car peels off and returns.
  • Food: use this day to stabilize breakfast, picnic lunch, and snack supplies for the rest of the Girdwood week.

Program

  • Drive from Girdwood to Seward with a real buffer.
  • Target the Major Marine 6-hour Kenai Fjords National Park cruise, ideally 11:30 AM–5:30 PM.
  • Return to Girdwood after the cruise.

Logistics

  • Drive: Girdwood → Seward: plan ~2.5 hrs with group buffer.
  • Cruise: not booked yet. Target Major Marine 6-hour National Park cruise, ideally 11:30 AM–5:30 PM.
  • Group booking: book all 13 together if possible so the group is not split.
  • Return: expect a late dinner / simple Airbnb evening.

Program

  • Alyeska Aerial Tram for views over Turnagain Arm and the Chugach Mountains.
  • Short summit walk / lunch / photos above Girdwood.
  • Winner Creek Trail if energy and weather are good.

Logistics

  • Drive: local Girdwood, generally 0–10 min.
  • Effort: flexible. Tram is easy; Winner Creek is the optional add-on if energy is good.
  • Booking: weather-dependent; no need to over-plan too early.

Program

  • Drive toward Hatcher Pass / Palmer area.
  • Visit Independence Mine State Historical Park: old gold mine, big views, no actual family mining business to launch.
  • Short hikes / viewpoint stops / picnic.

Logistics

  • Drive: plan ~2 hrs each way from Girdwood, longer with stops.
  • Road note: some Hatcher Pass roads can be seasonal/gravel; check current road conditions before going.
  • Food: picnic works better than gambling on group restaurant logistics with thirteen people.

Program

  • Drive toward Cooper Landing / Russian River.
  • Russian River Falls hike if conditions are good: salmon, forest, and the strong possibility of adults saying “stay together” every seven minutes.
  • Skilak Lake Road for scenic stops, lake views, and picnic.
  • Return to Girdwood.

Logistics

  • Drive: Girdwood → Cooper Landing / Russian River area: roughly 1.75–2.25 hrs.
  • Trail: Russian River Falls is about 2 miles each way on an easy/wide trail.
  • Road: Skilak Lake Road is a gravel scenic/refuge road; conditions can vary.

Program

  • Crow Creek Mine.
  • Turnagain Arm scenic stops.
  • Repeat a favorite short hike.
  • Girdwood Brewery / casual lunch.
  • Laundry, packing, and groceries before Denali.

Logistics

  • Drive: mostly local or short.
  • Purpose: preserve flexibility before leaving Girdwood.
  • Weather swap: this can absorb Alyeska, Hatcher, or Skilak if weather forces a move.

Program

  • Check out of Girdwood Airbnb by 10:00 AM.
  • Mass in Anchorage, likely Holy Family depending final timing.
  • Drive north toward Denali.
  • Talkeetna lunch/walk stop if timing works: stretch legs, eat, and keep moving north.
  • Check in at Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Logistics

  • Drive: Girdwood → Anchorage: ~45–60 min; Anchorage → Denali area: ~5 hrs before stops.
  • Mass: Holy Family is downtown Anchorage; verify current Mass times closer to departure.
  • Luggage: consider dropping large bags at Comfort Suites on the way through Anchorage if the hotel confirms storage before the Aug 18 stay.
  • Reservation: Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, Milepost 238.5 Parks Highway. Arrival Aug 16, departure Aug 18. Confirmation details omitted. Room capacity should be rechecked for all three rooms.

Program

  • Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour / bus option.
  • Visitor Center / simple evening after the tour.
  • No major second activity planned; this is the main Denali day.

Logistics

  • Tour: Tundra Wilderness Tour is listed as 5–5.5 hrs to Mile 43 in 2026.
  • Booking: not booked yet. For 13 people, book together if possible to avoid getting split across buses. Confirm seats/requirements for children and infants.
  • Wildlife: no guarantees. Bring binoculars and patience.
  • Packing: layers, water, snacks.

Program

  • Breakfast and packing at Denali Princess.
  • Optional very short walk only: hotel area, visitor center area, or a quick viewpoint.
  • Check out by 11:00 AM.
  • Leave the Denali area by about 11:30 AM–12:00 PM at the latest.
  • Drive south to Anchorage, unload at Comfort Suites, refuel, and return rental cars.

Logistics

  • Drive: Denali area → Anchorage airport area: plan 4.5–5+ hrs, more with stops.
  • Car returns: National due around 6:00 PM; Alamo due around 7:00 PM. No rental car return on 8/19.
  • Sequence: unload people/bags at Comfort Suites first, then fuel and return cars.
  • Reservation: Comfort Suites Anchorage International Airport, 2919 West International Airport. Check-in Aug 18; 3 rooms, breakfast included. Confirmation/PIN omitted.

Program

  • Early airport transfer for the Europe group.
  • Caterina and the Europe group depart Anchorage at about 8:15 AM.
  • Breakfast only if timing permits.
  • Flights home / onward to Europe.

Logistics

  • No rental car returns today; cars are returned on 8/18.
  • Book/confirm the Comfort Suites airport shuttle for around 5:45–6:00 AM.
  • Confirm shuttle capacity for the group and luggage; if needed, plan two shuttle runs or backup rides.
  • Group task: passports, chargers, car seats, and bags checked before leaving the hotel.

Now before you go

Things to know before you go

General guidance for the whole trip. Day-specific notes live inside the relevant day cards.

Weather

Expect roughly 10–18°C most days. Rain is normal in August.
  • Layers beat one heavy coat.
  • Boat day feels colder than land. Dress for wind and spray.
  • Rain is not automatically a cancellation; it is part of traveling in Alaska.

Wildlife

  • Do not approach animals, even for a good photo.
  • Kids should not run ahead on trails.
  • Control food and snacks, especially on trail days.
  • If a bear is nearby: do not run; group up and calmly create distance.

Driving

  • Drives are part of the trip, not interruptions of the trip.
  • Distances are real even when the map looks innocent.
  • Use bathrooms and snacks strategically.
  • Avoid night driving when possible; wildlife on roads is a real issue.

Group rhythm

  • Big days are balanced with local/flexible days.
  • Optional walks are genuinely optional.
  • Picnic logistics will beat group restaurant chaos almost every time.
  • Keep day packs ready; do not repack civilization every morning.

Open logistics to confirm

  • Airbnb capacity: listing appears to be max 12; with Caterina the group is 13. Get explicit host approval, including Miriam as an infant/child.
  • Denali rooms: recheck bed setup and occupancy across all three rooms.
  • Vehicles/luggage: two 7-seat minivans are legal but tight. Use soft bags, limit luggage, and consider storing large bags at Comfort Suites before Denali.
  • Bookings still open: Major Marine cruise and Denali bus tour.
